The operation of the Allied forces in Normandy was the remarkable event in the history of WWII.
One of the participants of this company was Lowton Collins. He was born in an Irish family and was the ninth child. They lived in Louisiana. Lowton was going to become a lawyer but he dreamt of a military career.
During WWII he showed himself as a prominent commander of the American Army. At the age of 44 Lowton Collins got a degree of a lieutenant colonel. In January 1943 he took part in the military actions at the Pacific ocean as a division commander.
When the Allied force landed in Normandy he was 48. He proved to be tough but an intelligent commander. There was a lack of suck commanders in the Allied force in France. His division took part in the heavy fighting’s for Cherbourg. The soldiers fought bravely under his command. One of them was a corporal John Kelly. When his platoon found itself under the heavy machine – gun fire he tried to explode the pill-box. But the load didn’t work.
After the second attempt the fire from pill-box stopped. Kelly made the next attempt and threw the grenade into the pill-box and blew it up.
Carlos Ogden
Another exploit was made by lieutenant Carlos Ogden.
Being wounded twice he cleared the way for his company and exploded the enemy’s cannon with a grenade. They were both awarded the medals of Honour - the highest award of the American Congress.
The fascist resistance in Cherbourg was over only on June, 27 1944. The 9-th division under general Collins’ command carried on severe fighting’s for several days more. The general exhibited great energy and military skills.
His troops captured 39042 enemy solders and officers. The invasion of the fortress which Hitler ordered to defend for long months encouraged the Alliens. The people who took part in the battle for Cotentin peninsula remembered the fear and exhausting battles. They exploits made great contribution to the Victory.
